About the Cluster
German industry is aiming to become greenhouse gas-neutral by 2045. Based in Lusatia, a region in eastern Germany undergoing major structural change, the CDI is an interdisciplinary network, idea generator and incubator focusing on successfully transitioning the industry to climate neutrality. To this end, the interdisciplinary Cluster mobilises expertise and synergy effects to drive solutions and innovations at the interface of science, business, politics and administration.
The Cluster Decarbonisation in Industries was founded in November 2021 on the initiative of four institutions based in Cottbus (around 100 km south of Berlin). These initiators are the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Systems IEG, the Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Competence Centre on Climate Change Mitigation in Energy-Intensive Industries (KEI). The KEI also operates the CDI Coordination Office in Cottbus, which is the central point of contact for Cluster partners.
From our base in Lusatia, we aim to become a key network and innovation driver with international appeal for a greenhouse gas neutral industrial future.
To achieve greenhouse gas neutrality in industry, we need innovations combined with lasting dialogue between industry, science, politics and administration. The Cluster Decarbonisation in Industries has set itself the goal of promoting this dialogue. As an interdisciplinary hub, the CDI brings together all relevant stakeholders. This targeted networking of the various actors at regional, national and European level is intended to make a significant contribution to removing obstacles to industrial decarbonisation while providing industrial companies with technical and scientific support in the transformation process in terms of their innovation and competitiveness.
Based in Cottbus in the south of the federal state Brandenburg, the aim is to establish a national and international centre of excellence in the field of industrial decarbonisation. In the long term, the activities of the Cluster can thus develop a nationwide as well as international radiance from Lusatia. The CDI therefore also contributes actively to structural development in the region.
The CDI supports its partners with targeted networking and knowledge transfer. Alongside national and international developments in decarbonisation, the Cluster also makes insights and findings available from its own internal projects. The work of the Cluster creates important impulses for new ideas and promotes interdisciplinary solutions for greenhouse gas mitigation in industry.
Key points of focus for the Cluster:
- Network building and access to experts
- Organisation and hosting of public conferences, industry events, and congresses for industry- and sector-wide technology and knowledge transfer targeting industrial decarbonisation
- Identification of potential for innovation, including initiation, management and follow-up activities on joint interdisciplinary research projects
- Strengthening the visibility of complementary Cluster competencies through active public relations work
- Initiation of qualification programmes to create a long-term, sustainable pool of skilled professionals to support the decarbonisation transformation process
